The 3 inch barrel gives it a much better balance compared to my 4 inch 686. Fired a hundred rounds or so of various 38 special and 357 magnum thru it, all without a hitch. If you are looking for a great revolver, you can\'t go wrong with a Smith & Wesson and this 686 plus in particular. Jul 29, 2012 · I have both of those barrel lengths in 686+ models. I wouldn't part with either of them. Both are extremely accurate. The 3 incher has a CT laser on it, and it shoots, well, like a laser. I personally think the 3" would be the better night-stand gun, and the 5" would be a bit better for range use, but either will do double-duty pretty well.
